Department of Education

The objectives of the Parliamentary Millennium Programme reflect many of the values and aims that underpin the new curriculum focus in South Africa. The Education component therefore has the potential to make a dynamic contribution to our nation’s knowledge stock, and foster an appreciation of our rich heritage and to building a sustained interest in the progress of our democracy.

The Education component objectives are:

  • To expose South Africans to a range of perspectives and encourage an awareness of the impact of perspective on identity.

  • To empower young people to approach learning in ways that will open new ideas and ways of seeing.

  • To instil pride in a generation of youth, all of who can share the African identity, and all of whom will be instrumental in shaping the African Renaissance.

  • The Education component of the Parliamentary Millennium Programme will translate concepts emerging from the Exhibitions into accessible, challenging educational tools for both the formal and informal education sectors.

  • A partner of the Parliamentary Millennium Programme since its inception, the Department of Education, through the South African History Project (SAHP), has jointly participated in a range of activities to date. These include:
